About the event
Led by Kgao Mashago and Ed Coogan
The original Queen Victoria Maternity Hospital was constructed by James Loban and Sons in 1904, based on a design by Allen Wilson, commissioned by the Guild of Loyal Women. This group of Dutch and English women, who remained loyal to the Queen of England, formed the guild to uphold their homeland's spirit of loyalty while in South Africa. Until recently, Transwerke quietly existed among heritage sites like the Constitutional Court and the Women’s Jail museum, subtly highlighting the role and significance of women in the history that shaped the Constitution Hill precinct as a heritage site. Today, it is evolving and embracing a new artistic identity.
